From Leibniz to Hockney — Part 3: The Proof That Euler’s Formula Is the Formula for ν
Scope: Natural units with h = 1 and c = 1 — established in Part 2. Note: ħ was NOT set to one and cannot be: ħ = h/2π, so in these units ħ = 1/2π. This is not a convention but a result — see Lemma 1. Frequency ν is measured in s⁻¹, mass in s⁻¹ — the same number, as established in Part 2.
Designation: this Part is the mathematical proof — the bijection ν → θ(t) → e^{iθ(t)} established from the definitions. The physical proof — each link measured, i’s necessity anchored in the zero point, the circle closed by sufficient reason — follows in Part 4: The Physical Proof That ν Is Euler’s Formula.
Premises (from Part 2, “The Null Clock”)
- P1. E = hν (Planck–Einstein), and with h = 1: E = ν. The proof lives in the emission/absorption ledger: frequency is counted, energy is the receipt (Part 2, chapter “the asymmetry”).
- P2. m = E/c², and with c = 1: m = ν. Mass dissolves into frequency; m = 0 carries no separate content.
- P3. Every physical content is thereby reduced to a single variable: ν.
What is to be proved (the theorem): Euler’s formula e^{iθ} = cos θ + i sin θ is not a description of an oscillator with frequency ν — it is the complete state that ν generates: to know ν is to know e^{iθ(t)}; nothing can be added.
Definition 1 — what ν is
Frequency is defined as the number of cycles per unit time:
ν ≡ dN/dt — the instantaneous tally rate (N(t)/t is the running average, which converges to ν as the interval shrinks; only for a constant ν are the two equal).
Definition 2 — what a cycle is
One cycle is one traversal of the phase through 2π: N(t) cycles ⟺ phase θ(t) = 2π·N(t).
Lemma 1 — ν is the derivative of the phase
θ(t) = 2π·N(t) ⟹ dθ/dt = 2π·dN/dt = 2πν (by Def. 1) ⟹ ν = (1/2π)·dθ/dt
Proof: differentiation of Definition 2, using Definition 1. ∎
Lemma 2 — the phase is the complete state
A harmonic measurement has two channels: the in-phase and the 90°-out-of-phase channel (the quadratures). The instrument reads cos θ(t) and sin θ(t). The pair (cos θ, sin θ) is — by Euler’s formula — precisely the point e^{iθ(t)} on the unit circle. Two real measurements, one complex number, nothing more to measure: any further function of (cos θ, sin θ) is determined by them.
The Main Theorem — Euler’s formula is the formula for ν
Step 1. Given ν (P3: all content is ν), the phase is generated: θ(t) = 2πνt (Lemma 1, integrated from 0). Note: for a time-varying frequency, θ(t) = ∫2πν(t′)dt′ — the bijection holds unchanged and is in fact strengthened: the phase carries the full history of ν.
Step 2. The complete state of the phase is (cos, sin) (Lemma 2):
e^{iθ(t)} = cos(2πνt) + i·sin(2πνt)
Step 3. The chain is bijective: ν → θ(t) → e^{iθ(t)}. No information is added along the way:
- Different ν give different θ(t) and thus different e^{iθ(t)} (injective).
- e^{iθ(t)} determines ν: ν = (1/2π)·d(arg e^{iθ})/dt (surjective / invertible).
Step 4. Therefore e^{iθ(t)} is the representation of ν — not a model of it. Conclusion:
e^{iθ} is the formula for ν. To specify ν is to specify e^{i2πνt}; the Euler circle is the complete form of frequency. ∎
Corollary 1 — the identity at θ = π
At half a cycle: e^{iπ} = −1. With P1–P2 (ν/m = 1 in natural units):
e^{iπ} + ν/m = 0 — the phase jump and the unit ratio cancel. The proof is self-consistent: in the scale where m = ν, the axiom reduces to Euler’s identity.
Corollary 2 — the generator
d/dt [e^{iθ(t)}] = iω·e^{iθ(t)}, with ω = 2πν. The next instant of the state is the state itself multiplied by its own structure — the rotation is driven from within, by i. (This is Part 3’s chapter 4, property two, now proved as a consequence of Euler = ν rather than assumed.)
Corollary 3 — the clock
Earth’s rotation: θ(t) = 2πt/86,400 s ⟹ ν_⊕ = 1/86,400 Hz. The same formula, another scale: the photon’s cycle and the day’s cycle are the same e^{iθ} in different units.
Scope (the audit clause)
The proof is structural: it shows that the mathematical content of ν is the phase rotation e^{iθ}, and that every quantum-optical measurement in fact reads precisely this formula (Lemma 2 is the measurable link: homodyne detectors, interferometers). It does not prove why nature realizes U(1) — why i, why the circle. That is Part 3’s open question (baryon asymmetry as the boundary condition). The series claims: “We did not choose Euler’s formula; we followed ν there, and it already stood.”
Corollary 4 — charge as phase generator
Theorem. Electric charge q is the sign of the phase rotation in charge space: the particle state is e^{iqχ}, and the antiparticle is the conjugation e^{−iqχ}.
Proof (Noether + U(1)). Every conservation law has a generator. Charge conservation has the phase as its generator: the transformation ψ → e^{iqχ} ψ commutes with the Hamiltonian precisely because q is constant. The element of U(1)’s Lie algebra is i. The sign of q is thus the direction of the rotation — not an ingredient in the particle, but a direction in its phase.
The measurement (Aharonov–Bohm). A particle around a closed magnetic flux acquires the phase shift Δθ = (q/ħ)∮A·dx — and note: ħ here is our ħ = 1/2π, not a convention. The AB phase is the geometric phase per unit of h’s cycle; its coefficient is measurable and measured. The shift is proportional to q and changes sign with q. The interference pattern reads charge as phase. The experiments confirm the coefficient across four decades: Chambers (1960, magnetic whisker), the leakage-free superconducting toroids of Tonomura and team (1980s, electron holography — the definitive verification), and the gravitational AB effect (Kasevich and team, 2022, rubidium-87 atom interferometry around a tungsten mass — the same phase mathematics, gravity as the potential). ∎
Audit: The proof shows that charge is defined by phase rotation, and that every charge measurement is a phase reading. It does not show why charge space is a circle (U(1)) and not something else; that is nature’s choice — measured, not derived.
Corollary 5 — the conjugation is the measured backward time
Theorem. The antiparticle is the particle’s phase conjugation: e^{−iθ(t)} = e^{iθ(−t)}. “Backward in time” is the geometric description of the conjugation when phase and time are the same parameter (the null clock).
Proof. θ(t) = 2πνt (main theorem, step 1). Set t → −t: θ(−t) = −2πνt. Since e^{−iθ} = cos θ − i·sin θ = overline{e^{iθ}}, time reflection is phase reflection. Measurable: opposite Aharonov–Bohm sign, annihilation e^{iθ}·e^{−iθ} = 1 (the phases to zero, the frequency released as light), spin-½’s double cover (Rauch–Werner, 1975). ∎
The Mullis insert. Kary Mullis, Nature 218:663 (1968), “The Cosmological Significance of Time Reversal” — 24 years old: half the universe hidden inside black holes of antimatter running backward in time. He called it “sophomoric” in his Nobel lecture. The error is bounded by the proof: the conjugation is measured (AB, annihilation), but it concerns the coordinate phase, not causality — Mullis took the measurable direction and gave it a cosmic body. The lesson for the series: the negation must be real — Mullis used his own paper as a sparring opponent.
Corollary 6 — the photon is made of Euler’s formula (the quadrature exchange)
Theorem. A photon that splits into two photons (γ → γ₁ + γ₂; measured: Budker Institute 1995/2002 in atomic fields; the Euler–Heisenberg Lagrangian is the coupling; light-by-light: ATLAS 2017) externalizes its two quadratures: the phases cos θ and sin θ, which in the single photon existed as the two channels of ONE state e^{iθ}, thereafter exist as two independent photons — two phases that together reconstitute the Euler circle.
Proof.
- Two channels, one state. From Lemma 2: the photon’s complete state is the point (cos θ, sin θ) on the circle. The channels are not two photons — they are two measurements of one.
- The splitting’s bookkeeping. In natural units: ν = ν₁ + ν₂ (energy conservation, measured). The phase bookkeeping θ = θ₁ + θ₂ is coherent structure, not a measured law — the measured quantities are the frequency sum and the polarization correlations. Framing: the photon carries the full circle; the splitting selects its two channels as two points.
- The exchange. Two photons are in quadrature when θ₂ = θ₁ + π/2: then photon 2’s cos channel equals photon 1’s sin channel, and vice versa — sin(θ₁+π/2) = cos θ₁, cos(θ₁+π/2) = −sin θ₁. The quadrature pair is the exchange of cos and sin. The single photon already contained this pair (Lemma 2); the splitting makes each element measurable as its own photon.
- Pair production as the reversal. In pair production (γ + krypton nucleus → e⁺ + e⁻, E144), the two quadrature channels are converted into two conjugated charges: the cos channel → e^{iθ} (the electron), the sin channel → e^{−iθ} (the positron). The photon’s EULER formula, formerly two measurement channels in one state, becomes two states with conjugated phase. The i — the generator — goes from binding the channels to separating them as charge signs.
- Conclusion. The photon consists of Euler’s formula in the strong sense: its content is (cos, sin), its splitting is the quadrature exchange, its pair production is the conjugate separation. There is nothing in the photon beyond e^{iθ}, and nothing in e^{iθ} beyond the two channels, which the splitting shows can stand alone. ∎
Corollary 7 — ν = ħω (the Schrödinger landing)
From Lemma 1, ν = (1/2π)·dθ/dt. But dθ/dt is — by definition — the angular velocity ω: the rate of rotation of the state on the circle (the tangent velocity, geometry shown by the differentiation d/dt(e^{iθ}) = iω·e^{iθ} — the i factor keeps the velocity vector tangent to the circle). Therefore:
ν = ħ·ω, and with E = ν (Part 2): E = ħω.
The relation every textbook postulates (Planck–Einstein in angular form) is here derived: ν from Definitions 1–2, ħ from Lemma 1, E = ν from Part 2. Differentiating ψ(t) = e^{iθ(t)} and multiplying by −iħ yields the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a stationary state: iħ·dψ/dt = Eψ. The generator of time-translation is −iħ; the energy is the eigenvalue; the rotation speed of the complete state is the energy.
Sign convention (footnote): textbooks usually write ψ = e^{−iEt/ħ} (clockwise); we use e^{+iθ} (counter-clockwise, the direction chosen in Part 4: i turns 90° counter-clockwise). The physics is identical — the sign is the phase convention of Corollary 4, applied consistently.
Dimensional note: radians are dimensionless (arc/radius); 2π and θ are scalars. Therefore ħ = 1/2π is a pure conversion factor between two dimensionless countings — cycles and radians — which is why E = ħω is dimensionally consistent in natural units and carries the SI unit energy·time only because SI has not set h = 1. ħ was never a physical constant; it is a conversion factor disguised as one. (This is the deep form of the h/ħ correction above.)
Audit: derived, not postulated — subject to Part 2’s premises (h = 1, c = 1) and Definitions 1–2. The Schrödinger landing shows the proof’s structure contains quantum mechanics’ time-evolution equation; it does not add new physics beyond what the premises carry.
Hockney’s prophecy:** “If experimentalists one day split a photon, then the Illuminati will get the Nobel Prize, and it will be an interesting ceremony.” The splitting is measured (BINP 1995/2002; the Euler–Heisenberg coupling is QED’s most precisely tested effect). The ceremony awaits.
arg (footnote — the operational form of the inverse): arg is the argument — the angle of a complex number read off the point: for z = r·e^{iφ}, arg(z) = φ, hence arg(e^{iθ}) = θ (mod 2π). The formula ν = (1/2π)·d(arg e^{iθ})/dt does not start at θ; it starts at the measured object — the point on the circle — and extracts the frequency out of it: arg reads the angle from the state, d/dt reads the angle’s motion, and ν falls out with the 1/2π factor. This is invertibility as an operation, not a principle: the frequency is not a hidden variable behind the state generating it — it is the state, differentiated. It is also exactly what heterodyne detection performs: the detector measures the quadratures (the point’s coordinates), arg is the mathematical name for reading the phase off them, and differentiation of the phase series recovers ν. One technical fine print, which is also the physical point: arg is ambiguous mod 2π (the point at θ and θ + 2π is the same point), so arg must be followed continuously in time — the “unwrapped” phase. Single readings therefore cannot suffice; time-resolved series can, for the series reveals how many full revolutions have passed, and thus the full θ(t), history included.
Audit (delimitation): Corollary 6 is structural: Lemma 2 (two real channels = one complex state) is measured in homodyne detection; the splitting and light-by-light are measured with the stated frequency conservations. The reading of the two outflows as precisely “the cos channel” and “the sin channel” is the structural interpretation of the entangled two-photon pair — the polarization measurements on the split photons test precisely these channels, but the correlation’s full phase relation is quantum-mechanical structure, not a single reading. The series claims the structural, not the experimental single shot.
Final line of the proof (Axiom IV): the negation must be real. The delimitations above are the proof applied to itself.
